Find your academic route
Start with the degree you want and the qualifications you already hold. Admission depends on your subjects, results, previous study and the programme’s own rules.
Bachelor’s
Check whether your school qualifications allow direct entry, subject-restricted entry or a preparatory route.
Master’s
Check degree recognition, subject credits, grades and any work experience or portfolio requirements.
Preparatory study
Some applicants need a Studienkolleg or other preparation. Requirements and entrance tests vary.
Understand the requirements
Open the programme’s own admissions page and record these six things:
- Required qualification and subject background.
- Minimum grades and any required subject credits.
- Teaching language, accepted language tests and minimum scores.
- Required documents and certification or translation rules.
- The exact application route: direct, uni-assist, or a preliminary review document (VPD).
- The deadline for your applicant category and intake.
There is no single IELTS score, German level or application deadline that applies to every degree. The university’s current programme requirements are the deciding source.
Prepare your Sri Lankan documents
For applications handled by uni-assist, the Sri Lanka guidance asks for:
- O/L and A/L certificates with subjects and grades. A Result Schedule is not sufficient.
- For A/L certificates issued from 2002 onward, the Common General (Paper) Test result.
- For completed university studies, the degree certificate and transcript showing the degree classification.
- The university grading system, including the minimum passing grade for the bachelor’s degree.
Individual programmes can ask for additional documents. Follow their rules for translations and certified copies; do not send originals unless specifically instructed by the official process.

Look beyond the university name. Compare curriculum, teaching language, total cost, city, support services and your actual fit with the entry requirements.
Save links to programmes you are considering in your workspace. Listings are discovery resources, not offers or recommendations from partner universities.
Open my shortlistWork backwards from the deadline
Many programmes use 15 July for winter entry or 15 January for summer entry, but earlier and different deadlines are common. Record the exact date on each programme’s website.
Uni-assist recommends applying at least eight weeks before the deadline. A VPD, if required, may be only one step: you may still need to apply to the university yourself.
Check uni-assist deadlines and processing guidance ↗Plan your funding and visa
Many public programmes charge no tuition, but living expenses and semester contributions remain. Some universities and programmes charge tuition, including exceptions for non-EU applicants.
Official 2026 study-visa guidance uses €11,904 per year (€992 per month) for a blocked account. Eligible scholarships or a declaration of commitment can be alternatives. Your actual budget may be higher.
Do not add the blocked-account balance on top of a full year of living expenses as though it were a second annual cost. Allow separately for tuition, deposits, travel and other start-up expenses.
